Overcoming Setbacks

What makes someone continue on their journey to achieve their vision and another person give up?

How does one person pick themselves up and dust themselves down and start again? Different people use different techniques and we know life is a challenge with the Covid19 virus and the country in lockdown.

But you do have the opportunity and ability to change or you wouldn’t be reading this because reading, writing, walking, talking are all things that you learned to do and without doubt you will have experienced obstacles along the way. Perhaps the first time you had to stand up in class and read a book, or a time you sat an exam and just didn’t understand the question, or when you took your first steps and promptly landed with a thud back down on the floor again.

So, you have had the ability from an early age but do you have the focus and motivation to do it.

We process experiences by thinking about them, talking about them and dreaming about them until it becomes a learning resource. But this doesn’t happen on every occasion and can become stuck in time and the process doesn’t complete. When this happens you may avoid any occasions or experiences that bring you into the arena of being subjected to it again.

If this has happened to you then you’re likely to know because when you think about a memory now it’s likely you’ll feel physical sensations along with it, perhaps tightness in your throat or churning in your stomach. But you can help yourself overcome negative memories such as this by following this process.

Questions to ask yourself

In this current lockdown what is going well despite the setback?

– even though we often shut it out, often something in the experience is going well.  So, reflect on what is going well, even if it is as simple you get up each morning and you are still safe and well. Gratitude for the smallest things keeps our mind positive.

What isn’t going so well?

 – now consider what isn’t working out so good.  It might be that you are getting under each others feet, in the family, or getting bored from not enough to do.

When this experience happens consider, what are you learning?

Even though bad stuff happens, we know it will pass and the important thing is we can still learn from it. Perhaps you’ve had the time to learn how to grow your own plants, or you’ve learnt how to recycle something.

What will you do differently in the future?

–      This is critical after any negative experience happens, what will you do to help yourself overcome this obstacle in the future. So, if it was getting bored then what hobbies or interest could you start, that will fill your time and help you to relax more. Meditation is always a brilliant skill to learn and always helps in times of stress but the opportunities are endless these days to learn any skill online.

Writing all these things down or discussing them will help you come to terms with the challenges and negative thoughts that are getting in your way.

Be extraordinary this month and not ordinary, there’s plenty of space there waiting for you.
