So are you a Pebble or a Potato? What? She’s gone mad I hear you shout!
But seriously, we are all subject to change in our lives but if people are not on board with the change taking place, then ‘shift’ can really hit the fan and we can feel like we are in very hot water.
There are those people who are the pebbles amongst us, so as the temperature of the water gets hotter, they sink to the bottom and stay there, causing a few ripples on the way. They can be seen lurking about, telling everyone, why the change is all wrong and will never work.
Then there are the potatoes, who are ok with the hot water to begin with but as soon as it gets hotter they start to turn to mush and before you know it, you have meltdown. These people are often absent from work through stress or quiet and unresponsive. You think they don’t care but they do, they are just overwhelmed by it all.
What we really need to think like in a major change shift is the coffee bean. The ones that adapt to the water and by doing so changes the condition of it so it tastes good. They accept that we are always in the ‘shift, it’s just the depth that varies. And no matter what the depth, they can acclimatise to the change.
So start thinking about being a coffee bean, follow these simple thoughts:
If you have no control over how hot the water gets then you need to get used to it; sooner or later it will cool down as the change becomes accepted and the new normal.
Even coffee beans have bad days but never two in a row, so catch those pebble or potato thoughts and thank them but rest them. We are at our most relaxed when we have a strong sense of belonging and feel in control of our own lives. Consider whether those pebble or potato thoughts are helping you to gain control or in fact hindering you.
The deeper the water, the stronger the coffee bean needs to be, so give yourself permission to take time out and recharge your batteries, you’ll come back stronger and feeling healthier.
I hope the water of change doesn’t get too deep for you, but remember to think like a coffee bean and you’ll get through it. Everything passes by eventually and we have to accept that shift happens, it’s how you deal with it that matters .
